The Magic Retirement Pill
The Magic Retirement Pill?
Are you ready for the key to be financially prepared for
retirement....? One thing is all you need...well maybe two. Are
you ready??? Ok, here is the magic pill--discipline and
responsibility. That's all you need!
No, the answer isn't in a late night infomercial or at an options
trading workshop. Unfortunately, so many Americans today look
to these and similar avenues to save them from their financial
distresses. It blows my mind to see how people of otherwise
sound mind believe they can retire at 60 and have a
comfortable
lifestyle when they're already 50 and haven't started saving for
retirement.
And they come in all shapes and sizes. A very kind married
couple in their early 60s, not even close to being prepared for
retirement. What do they do? They buy a new and more
expensive home than the one they live in already.
Or how about the couple in their late 30s that have 3 children
that all intend on going to college. They make good money and
live in a nice house. Surely they have saved? No. Even though
they have made over 6 figures for several years, not a penny
has been saved for the children's college education and only a
couple thousand in an IRA. Now they want to buy a new half
million dollar home, which will increase their mortgage payment
substantially.
I apologize if it sounds as if I'm ranting, but I am. As a financial
advisor, I can provide sound advice and work with my clients to
plan for our ever-changing worlds. The one thing that I cannot
change is peoples' behavior. If someone does not have the
discipline and responsibility to save money - even a very small
amount - on a consistent basis, there's nothing I or anyone else
can do...not even the infomercial folks. Yet, people seem to
think
things will be okay; that, "It'll work out somehow. Won't it?"
I don't know the answer to that question. I do know that we're
living longer, health care costs continue to increase, Social
Security and Medicare are woefully underfunded, and
Americans
haven't saved enough on their own.
Do you think it'll be okay? There aren't many guarantees in life,
but if you start saving early, I guarantee you will have a better
chance than others that wait, all else being equal. This way you
won't have to be searching for and relying on a magic pill.
